Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Motor burning up

Expert: Bill Brainard - 7/3/2009

Question
Hi,
We have a split system unit.We had problems with the blower motor not starting up properly. We had to give the squirrl cage a turn to start it up.That motor fried eventually.
This old motor was replaced with excact specs except the new motor was a 3 speed instead of 2.
Our maint.guy came and hooked up the New blower motor and it ran for 2 minutes or so then made a noise with a nasty smell and stopped running.I bought a 3 year warranty with the motor so I can get another one but what is causing this to burn up so quick. Many thanks,Ian

Answer
Fluke!  or it is possible the maintaince guy hooked it up wrong. But probably not. New motors have a 1 year warrenty. Get a replacement. If the second one goes bad immediatly it is hooked up wrong. Parts are bad at start up, more often than people know. Good luck.
