Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Rheem Air Handler

Expert: Jim Barnhart - 7/13/2009

Question
2 Year old Rheem Classic Plus air handler sweats to the point of dripping. Installer said it was normal, looked at my neighbors systems and they are not sweating, wanted to compare as I live in central florida and it is humid. Unit is located in garage, exposed, drain line appears to be flowing smoothly, although I have not flushed it. also has overflow shut off valve. Is this sweating normal?

Answer
Lee,
It's called condensation, that's what happens when the cold meet's the warm.
It's normal for the cooling coil to condensate and drip water off of the coil fins into a drip pan that drain's to some convenient place, if the drain line isn't producing condensation then the unit's not cooling.
It's not normal for the exterior of the unit, duct or refrigeration lines to condensate/sweat, if they do condensate it's an insulation problem or lack of insulation problem.
