Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - SEER rating

Expert: Norval Trimborn - 7/4/2009

Question
Hi Norval;

I've been trying to find the SEER rating of my ComfortMaker air conditioner unit.  The installer showed me how to look on the tag, but I can't remember exactly where to look.  I thought he said it was a 12 SEER, but according to comfortmaker's website, they only make 13 and 14 SEERS with R-22.  This system was installed in August of 2007.  I live about 40 miles north of San Antonio, Texas-and it seems to run a LOT to keep the inside temperature at 79 degrees F.  It runs for a while, shuts off for 5 minutes, then comes on again for another 20 minutes or so before shutting off for 5 minutes again.  I hope this is normal operation.

Outside unit:

Serial Number:  E062403390
MODEL NUMBER:  N2A324GKA200
HOLDS 4.65 LBS OF R-22

AIR HANDLER IN ATTIC:
PRODUCT NUMBER:  FSM2X2400A1
MODEL NUMBER:  FSM2X2400A
SERIAL NUMBER:  A071071383

How good are comfort maker products?  I thought i read they were made by United Technologies.  I'm pretty sure I have the cheapy-builder unit.

Thanks for your help.

Answer
How long the system runs depends on the outside temperature, whether everything is clean(filter, condenser, blower wheel and evap. coil) and how well the system is sized to the heat gain of the house. You should have it serviced every year to check for problems/dirt. If it holds the temperature you have set at the thermostat and cycles on and off you would seem to be doing ok.
