Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Turning off upstains AC

Expert: Norval Trimborn - 7/3/2009

Question
We have a two story home and are now empty nesters.  We live in the downstairs and the upstairs is only used when our children visit or have overnight guests.  Does turning off the upstairs unit cause any problems or is this acceptable to do.  We live in Texas and the summers are really hot and electric bills are really high.  Thank you for your response

Answer
If you have high humidity in your area and you run only 1 of 2 units you may have trouble keeping the humidity down. Your downstairs unit may run more than it needs to because there is less insulation between the hot upstairs  and the cool lower floor than there is in the ouside walls and roof.
