Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - altitude spec. on a/c unit

Expert: Norval Trimborn - 7/7/2009

Question
Will an American Standard Triumph 16 packaged unit with a specification altitude rating of 0 - 2000 ft. operate properly in El Paso, Texas with an altitude of 3800 ft. Also, what temperature should this unit be cooling from its closest register?

Answer
The altitude specification is for the gas heating side of the unit. The gas manifold orifices should be changed at higher altitudes for the heat to work correctly. The normal temperature difference between the return air and the supply air is ~ 18-20 degrees, but this will be lower if the humidity is very high.
