Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - carrier unit condensor valve cores

Expert: Howard Livingston - 7/5/2009

Question
Do older Carrier units have a valve core on the suction side that cannot be removed if they are leaking freon? I have used Robinair's removal tool with no success, and have contacted local a/c repairman and was told they are not removable and to put teflon on the threads until unit goes out. Thank you very much for your help...

Answer
Been at it since 1973 & have never seen a unit without removeable schrader valve. What can happen is some $&^!#*  guy will screw the cap on so tight it flares the end closed & you can't unscrew it. Best way to remove is file off the threads until the valve can be unscrewed. Then reseal with a cap with rubber pad inside.
