Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - tapping into air ducts

Expert: Howard Livingston - 7/1/2009

Question
Hi Howard, I finished our basement a few years ago and did not think we needed to tap into the ducts for air. Over all, it's pretty comfortable except when we entertain. I was thinking of putting 2-3 vents in by tapping into the existing ducts, but I just want to make sure I do it right. I'm no pro, but I think I can do it right if I take my time. There's about 6in space between the ducts and drop ceiling, can you give me a break down of tools, and materials you think I would need? I greatly appreciate any help you can give me, thanks Joe

Answer
Hi Joe, you can do it. Whatever size duct you tap into you would need a Y fitting with a 45 deg side outlet that could be less in diameter than the run. LIke an 8" run with a 6" side out. Or a 6" run, 6" side out. Then on the side out connect about a 2' flex duct(or whatever) to a 6" 90 deg  outlet register box. The box will be about grille size 4" x  8". To the box screw on a 4 x 8 supply air grille. The grille can be closed off when not needed.
Now, sheet metal fittings are made to "standard" sizes ONLY. So these sizes may not be available so you will just have to figure what you want & compromise on whats made. That 6" space may force you to compromise too. Use duct tape to hold it all together. Questions ??
