Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - trane ac/heat pump

Expert: Tim McAuley - 7/2/2009

Question
QUESTION: I have a trane ac system with a heat pump.My question is when i have the ac turned off at the thermostat which is a digital interface, my ac fan will still kick on, it will shut off and on just if i had it running in the on mode. could it be the thermostat?

ANSWER: Ken - When you say that your a/c fan cycles on & off, do you mean the outdoor condensing unit fan, or the indoor blower fan?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: The outdoor condensing fan shuts off but the inside blower fan will turn off then turn back on even when the thermostat is set to off. also amonth ago the inside blower would not shut off even in the off mode. I would have to turn it off at the breaker but it quit doing that after a day.

Answer
Ken - I suspect that you have the type of thermostat that can be set to bring on the indoor fan for a certain amount of time each hour in addition to the normal a/c cycle time. Many digital t-stats have this feature which some call an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) feature. Some of them have to be programmed to do this, and some probably come from the factory already set. The purpose is to keep air moving thru your system filtration to keep the indoor air as clean as possible. In addition, air movement decreases stratification, so that temperature is more evenly distributed throughout the house.

See if your t-stat has this feature. If you don't have the owners/installation manual, you may be able to download it from the manufacturers web site.

Good Luck
Tim
