Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC/Uneven air flow

Live in Tucson, AZ and have a Bryant (15 years old) heat pump on the roof. We just remodeled the kitchen. Prior to the remodel, the ducting all ran through sofits. All the registers had to be damped down at the registers to control the air. The blower runs at a very high speed most of the time it is working. Completely open, the air feels cold when heating because it moves so fast. Damped down, the registers are noisy.

We removed sofits in the kitchen during the remodel so now two ducts had to be moved to the roof with ceiling registers in the ktichen/dining area. Now the old registers throughout the house react as they did but the new registers have very light air flow and virtually no sound coming from them.

There are no controllable dampers in the system that I know of. Is this the way it should be? Which side of the system is working correctly? What questions can I ask the installer of the roof ducting to verify that things are correct? It seems to me the quiet side is the way it should be.

You should have manual balancing dampers on each branch lines attached to the main duct.If you do not have them suggest buying and installing.Reducing air flow at the supply registers is not the correct way. You also may need to adjust the blower fan speed. Most blowers are multi speed. They make balancing dampers for square and round metal and fiberboard ducts .Verify all your ducts are sealed, and not broken or loose.Hopefully your ductwork is sized correctly for the equiptment.
