Question
I have an A/C unit with a bad compressor and I wanted to know if I could purchase a new compressor or if I should get a new unit. The A/C unit is approx. 12 years old and is a Goodman, model CLJ48-1. Part of my hesitation in buying a new unit is I am not sure if I am going to stay in my current home. How long will a new compressor last? Thanks!

Answer
Dan,
A new compressor if properly installed should last at least another 10 years if not longer. Your  compressor replacement is one of the most expensive repairs that you can do on your system . With your system being 12 years old you should consider replacing the system . You would have a new efficient system with a warranty that you could pass on to the new home owner if you sell . Hope this helps.
