Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC/Return vent

Floor ac return vent
When the contractor put in the new ac and heat unit the used the old floor furnace for the return vent. Is their a way to put it in the wall and cover the old furnace. We trip over it and cut our feet on it regularly.

What did the Contractor initially say about mounting it in the wall ?  Putting it in the wall is OK only if you have depth in the wall not just surface area, doubt your walls are very deep, most walls are only 6" deep give or take . If you look at  your present return grille/ duct in the basement ,guessing it is upwards of 12" deep with a return duct going to your furnace of at least 12"  ,mounting in a wall gives you the surface area but the wall being only 6" deep how would you connect a 12" return duct to a 6 " depth duct, not enough return air going to your furnace, to much restrictions.
