Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Air exchangers

Question
Hello,
We are building a home in Vermont and have sprayed in foam insulation being put in.  The house is made from James Hardee fiber cement siding.  Our plumber has told us that we need three air exchangers in the house (at approximately $700 each).  Our house has four floors—these are walkout basement, main living area, bedroom floor (with room above garage) and attic—total of about 4,000 square feet (maximum) all together.  We think this sounds like too many air exchangers and that one good one in the basement should be sufficient.  Can you give us any information about this?

Thanks very much.

Answer
I am not excactly sure what you mean by heat exchangers.  If this for heating or cooling or both?  Are you considering hot water heat?  Without seeing the design of the house I can not tell you excatly how many you units you need, but I would split it up in half atleast.  You need in the neighborhood of 8 tons of cooling.  To put in a big 8 ton unit is not really realitic to cool the home.  If you are building the home, then there should be engeering drawings on how to condition the home.

Good luck
Craig
