Question Hello; I had an air conditioner installed last week and it seems to cool quite well. It is a 2 ton unit in a 1800 sq ft house. Yesterday the unit ran well for about an hour and then shut down before reaching the set temp of 24 degrees celcius.
When it shut down, I could hear refrigerant bubbling in the area of the "A coil". (I had noticed that noise from the time it was installed.)
It was quite pronounced and I coud hear it on the main floor of the bungalow for about 2 minutes. My concern at the time was to get the unit running again so I went to the thermostat and switched the unit from cool to heat then back again. The A/c started right away and continued until I shut it off a couple of hours later.
My questions are:
Is it normal for an AC to turn off like this even when it is 2 degrees short of the set temp? Is this a normal cycling of some kind?
Is it normal to hear gurgling in the coil when the unit shuts off?
I watched the installer do the work and the pressure (leak)test was good. He also used scales for the refrigerant when he filled the system, so the charge should be close to being right. He was a certifed ac tech of residetial and commercial equipment with 16 years experience.
Answer It is not normal for the unit to shut off before it reaches the setpoint. The unit may gurgle slightly and for a short time before it shuts off but not loudly and for 2 minutes. If it happens again I would have a service technician look at it. The only way to know if it is cycling correctly is to let it cycle off and see if it comes back on normally. I would just keep an eye on it and if it recurs you may have a problem that needs to be looked at by a technician.
