Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Frigidaire window air conditioner

Expert: Howard Livingston - 7/18/2007

Question
I suspect that my window air conditioner may need refrigerant recharging. Can I do it myself? The unit is a Frigidaire FAL104KJA1, 10,000 BTUs, and the label indicates R-22 refrigerant, 17.5 ounce. Manufacture date: June '01.

Answer
Those things don`t have a service valve, Wayne. You need to add one that clamps on the suction line, then a set of freon gauges, A drum of R22, an accurate scale to do that. Want to buy all that ?? Quick test. In the heat of the afternoon & the unit pulled from the window & the case removed, turn it on & see if the suction line is chilly to cold. If so, freon OK.
