Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - Noisy Central Heating

Expert: eric maxon - 12/15/2004

Question
I have recently moved into my house and have a noise problem with the central heating system. The pipework under a smallish area of the landing almost continually makes a tapping noise, as if the pipes are expanding and contracting.

I can understand it might do this when the system first comes on or when it shuts down but, as I say, it does it almost continually. It sometimes helps if I bleed the system but when that does work it's only for a short time then it starts tapping again.

The house is about 7 years old and the upstairs floors are chipboard.I am reluctant to lift the boards and see what might be happening (health problems) unless I have to.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Brian Firth

Answer
Thanks for the question. I am guessing that you have copper piping and baseboard heating.  If so, it is not uncommon to hear the copper expanding and hitting a piece of wood and making noise.  If the hole in the wood is too small to allow the expansion you could hear it all the time

Eric
