Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - clothes washer not working

Expert: Eric Campion - 9/30/2004

Question
We have a Kenmore Ultra Fabric Care 1 Extra Capacity Plus~ Model number 92584800.

The washer is filling with water, and seems to be draining, but the barrel doesn't spin and the agitator doesn't move.  It makes a noise, like it is trying to work, but nothing happens.  It will run through the cycle, but nothing but filling and draining is happening.  Not sure when it stopped.  I did three load last night, the first two worked just fine, and I loaded the third and went to bed.  When I got up in the morning and went to unload it, the clothes were all heavy with water.  The cycle indicator said it had finished the whole washing and rinsing and spinning cycle, but I'm not sure when during the cycle it actually stopped.  I tried to do each seperate cycle manually (set to wash, set to rinse, and set to spin) and none would work except for filling with water (I am assuming that because there was only water in the clothes, no standing water, that it is draining fine).  Just don't want to call a repair man if it is something my husband can fix, or to find out that it is shot and we need to not only pay for the call, but also need a new one or that it will cost as much to fix it as replace it.  Thanks!

Answer
http://www.affordableappliance.com/Tips/CouplerInstallation.htm

Follow the link above it should walk your husband right through the diagnosis and replacement of the coupler, that is most likely your problem.   We also sell the coupler for $9.95, shipping of $4.95.   If you need further assistance, just email.   Otherwise good luck, if your husband is slightly mechanically inclined he should be able to tackle this one.   Thank you for your request and have a great day.   Ann
