Heating, Air Conditioning, Fridge, HVAC - heat pump service contract

Expert: Bill Brainard - 3/19/2005

Question
Hi,

I moved into a condo a year ago and wanted to start checking on service contracts for my bryant heat pump.  what should i look for in a service contract when i start shopping around.

Thanks,

Matt

Answer
Unless you have more money than brains, forget it.  The contracts provide a yearly cleaning & a look see if there is trouble. You can hose it & wipe clean for 5 cents of water. Then pay for a service call ($45 to $60) & save money. If the compressor goes bad, you pay for the repair. They either give cheap labor & double the cost on parts or some other scam.  It is well known in the industry that service contracts are a "BIG" profit center.  The best service contracts are only available at the time of purchase.  The others cost too much. In my opinion.  The age of the heat pump is the bigest factor. They last from 10 to 15 years.  Hope this helps*****************************************************************************************************************
One more thing. If you want to compare. Ask, how much a year & exactly how many dollars if the compressor goes out. Then Add the two together.
