Question
I try to learn how to make death metal vocals cause i want to give something "beasty" in our songs.
The problem is that i dont know if i am using my diaphragm or not. How can i understand if i use it right?
Is it normal to feel a little pain or burn in the back of the throat while practicing in the start?

Answer
Hi paolo, i apologise for the lateness of my reply, but im here now and i can answer your question.
I am actually a death metal vocalist in my band myself, so this should be an easy question for me.
Id just like to warn you, however, that it is critical you use good technique whilst singing death metal style vocals. If you dont, then this can lead to vocal chord damage and end your singing career. however, i am not a singing teacher, so i am not really sure what correct and/or bad technique is. so, therefore, i cant really tell you what the correct technique is.
When i practice with my band, i always spend a good 10-15 minutes 'singing'- not screaming- before we practice then start 'screaming'. When i scream, i always try to make sure that i scream on a strong exhale of air, as i believe this will do less damage to my throat. after the practice, my throat feels a bit sore for about 10 minutes but then im fine afterwards. So in answer to your second question, yes it is normal to feel a bit of sorness in your throat, no matter what level you are at.

well i have to be honest, i dont really think i answered your question well, but this is a difficult question as it goes beyond my expertise as an all expert 'expert'. What im basically trying to say is without proper technique, singing 'death metal' can be very dangerous, so id try and book lessons with a singing teacher.
well thanks for using the all experts website and good luck with your band and music career
