My question was not a homework question. I am a teacher in a congregational school. I am teaching "Hoda'ah," the blessing in the Amidah, and am trying to find some other words with the same root. I was hoping you'd help. You said that the root was yud-daled-hay and I am finding that even more confusing as I search for other words of thanks with the same root other than "modeh" and "todah," neither of which contains a yud.
I hope you can help.
Answer Marla,
A good resource is http://he.wiktionary.org, the dictionary section of the Hebrew Wikipedia. It gives the root words and other useful information concerning the etymology of Hebrew words.
Your question is not unusual when dealing with root words - many times the root barely resembles the word derived from it.
