Question hello,
My sicilian grandmothers surname is schilliro. this name is very uncommon. we have reason to belive her family was jewish. do you think this name has a connection to the german schiller surname?
Answer Andrea,
I am not sure about the Schiller connection, but there might be some Jewish connection. Some of the Jewish surnames are acronyms (Katz, for instance, stands for Kohen Tzedek, "righteous priest"). There is an indication that the name Schillir is similarly an acronym, although its origin is unknown.
