Question
In her Ketubah, my mother's Hebrew name was spelled shin, vav, lamed,
mem, yud, tav.  She doe not speak or read Hebrew and has been pronouncing
it Shulamis, accent on the second syllable.  I have Israeli friends who tell me
the correct pronunciation is Shlomit, accent on the end. Can you explain?

Answer
Rosalie -

Your mother's name is Shulamit. She uses the Yiddish pronunciation, which pronounces the letter tav as 's', while in Hebrew it is pronounced as 't'. Israeli Hebrew uses Sephardic pronunciation rules, which emphasize the last syllable.

Shlomit is a similar-sounding name, but it is a different name.

All the best,

Gaddy
