Question
I believe that my surname "Sanger" is of sefardic origin, though I am not 100% sure.  I suspect that if so, it has two roots; san and ger.  I understand what "ger" means, but what does "san" mean, and how does that affect the meaning of the combined "sanger"?  Thx for the help.

Answer
Dear Mr. Sanger,

If your name did indeed come from the Sephardic, it would most likely have come from the Aramaic word "Sanegor" meaning a defense attorney, which over time and with the lack of written vowels in Hebrew and Aramaic could likely evolve into Sanger. I don't believe it would have been a combination of two words.

All the best,
Aiden
