Question Hello, I am currently writing a personal statement for admission to a Political Science graduate program. I am finding one section in particular difficult to express, which is worded in the title as "personal statement regarding your goals for graduate study and a professional career." I do have specific professional ambitions, entry into the British Diplomatic Service (I'll be an international student in the US), but I'm finding it difficult to see what they want from this section. Do you have any advice on expanding this section so I can tailor it to a more specific and convincing conclusion?

Thank you for the thoughtful question, Andy. In your case, I think you may be overthinking this essay a touch. You have specific goals for your program -- to show them effectively to the university to which you are applying, you need to develop an outline and then an essay that shows that your goals come from a product of the specific experiences you have had (choose one or two to focus on), and the education you still need. The key, in any essay, is not just to answer the question, but share your own perspectives based on specific experiences -- in any essay topic, universities are ultimately asking you to discuss something about yourself that is not readily apparent from your resume/CV, much as they are in this case.
I wish you luck with your application. Because you have a specific goal in mind, you have a distinct advantage in writing this essay -- capitalize on it!
