Help with College & Grad School Applications - Masters Degree

Expert: Jay Cutts - 2/25/2009

Question
I graduate with my bachelors in Business and Organizational Leadership this August.  I'm planning to continue my education and get my masters degree.  I'm having a hard time deciding between a MBA and a MSM degree.  The MSM is about 1 1/2 semesters shorter than the MBA.  I just want to know how they are both viewed in the business world and if an MSM would hold me back.  I'm just burned out of going to school and working full time with a family so I want to get done quickly, but not sacrifice my degree choice.

Answer
Hi, Stephen.

I had to do a search to see what an MSM is.  Looks like it is a business degree designed for people without much business background and is designed to be one year.

I think that is how employers would look at it as well.  It is probably unknown to many and appears sort of cut rate.  I think that speaks for itself.

If you are burned out, why not take a semester or two off to have a bit of a break and get other things in your life together?  Most MBA programs will let you start any semester.

If you're employer will support you in getting an MBA, they might give you some time off for it. You can look for an "executive MBA" that is designed for people who are working now.  These things only apply if you have a professional level job now.  If you don't, you might consider looking for one, now that you are close to having your Bachelors.

I'd be glad to go over various options with you if you'd like to call me at 800-353-4898, day or evening.

I also have a lot of free planning info and info on the GMAT on my site:

I hope that helps for now.  Feel free to get in touch.

Sincerely,
