Question QUESTION: I'm 13 at the time and I make straight A's,only for B's this year,I'm getting ready to go to high school and I am african american,Indian runs in my family but I am not Indian. But I want to go to medical school and I am low income. My mom doesn't work, not because she can't but she just chooses not to.My dad is old even though he has a lot of money,a lot,I just don't want to depend on him.I signed up for this program that helps pay for medical school but I don't want to depend on it fully. So how do I pay for college or medical school?Does this mean that I can't go to college or something?
By the way,I want to be a psychiatrist.
ANSWER: Hi, Corrina.
There are many ways to pay for college and for medical school. Lots of student loans are available. These loans are an investment in your future. There are even some programs that remove part of your loans for you if you agree to work in a low income area for a few years. So don't worry about the money for going to college or med school. It will be there.
The most important thing you can do now is to keep your grades strong. If you have strong grades, it will be easier to get into a good college. You might even be able to get a scholarship.
When you are in college, it is important to keep strong grades there too.
One of the best ways to get strong grades and to get the most out of your classes is to learn to have a good relationship with your teachers. If you are having a little trouble understanding something, go to them and ask for some help. If you are having trouble organizing your study time or if there are other things happening in your life that make it hard to study enough, talk to your teachers about it. They may have some suggestions or at least they will understand what you are going through and will know that you care and that you trust them enough to talk to them. If you are open and honest with your teachers, they will work hard to help you succeed.
Good luck with your plans. I know you will make it!
Sincerely,

QUESTION: Well I heard that scholarships are very hard to come by,is that true or is that just true for kids with bad grades or something?
Answer Hi, Corrina.
There are not that many scholarships but if your grades are good you might get one.
The important thing is that there are loans available. Almost everyone pays for their education through loans. It is the normal way to do it, so you shouldn't worry about being able to afford it.
