AboutMGR Expertise I try to work with students to look at their goals, academic history, SAT or GRE scores, extracurricular activities, etc.... I then try to help these students figure out where they stand in order to best achieve their goals. At times, I am able to suggest specific schools a student may be interested in.
I am unable to tell students whether or not they will obtain admission to a specific college, however, I am able to provide general guidance.
While I will provide general college / graduate school essay topic advice, I will not provide any editing assistance.
Experience I have been an SAT I, AP Biology, and writing tutor for the past eight years. I have provided college advice and essay editing for many of my former students, and have served on the alum interviewing committee for my alma matter (an ivy league school).
Education/Credentials BA - Environmental Biology
MSEd - In Progress
(Tests Taken: SAT I, SAT II - Math IIC, Biology, GRE, LAST, CST, and various others)
Question Hi and thanks for reading my question!
I have a bachelor's degree (Honors) in Mechanical Engineering (from Manchester University in the United Kingdom), and have worked in the field for over 12 years in Jordan (the Middle East). Now I am thinking of making some change in my career. I have always been interested in psychology, and I am talented in writing and research. My aim is to receive a Ph.D. in a field that combines engineering and psychology.
Question 1: Can you help me choose a topic of research? Or at least tell me how to go about it?
Question 2: Can I start the Ph.D. program directly, or would I have to complete a Masters program as a pre-requisite?
Question 3 : What would be the career opportunities with a Ph.D. in the study area you have suggested?
Please Note: I am from Jordan, the Middle East. I am sure I want to go to a Canadian university (English speaking).I am able to fully support myself financially in Canada (tuition plus living expenses).
Thanks for your help and time
Ibrahim
Answer Hi Ibrahim,
You may be interested in organizational psychology. This is a branch of psychology that looks at performance in the workplace, consumer behavior (aka where to put the candy stands so that a store makes sells the most money, etc). See the following website for more info: http://www.wcupa.edu/_Academics/sch_cas.psy/Career_Paths/Industrial/Career06.htm
You can generally start Psy.D programs - or counseling psychology (not research based) without much experience - and some programs are very easy to get into.
Ph.D programs, which involve psychological research, require somewhat of a background in psychology - not usually a masters, but more of a postbac - so you may need to go back to school - I would suggest finding a program that interests you and looking at the requirements.
