Help with College & Grad School Applications - Competition and former grades

Expert: Elena U. Rodríguez - 12/21/2006

Question
Can a course you  did poorly on in your freshman highschool year that affect a university's decision to accept you in later years ? I've heard "stories" about this happening from former teachers(e.g. student A didn't get into the University of Toronto's business school after her senior year because she failed and had to retake the same a course in grade nine. Due to the university course's competitive nature she was not accepted.). I would like to know if this is at all possible and what the likelihood of this happening would be.

Answer
It depends on the course and the university that you are planning on applying to. If you are not satisfied with your performance in this class that you are worried about, I would recommend you visit your guidance counselor and discuss whether or not you would benefit from retaking the class during the Summer.

Best of luck,

Elena Rodriguez
