Help with College & Grad School Applications - DECA/FBLA

Expert: Jay Cutts - 5/21/2007

Question
I'm going into my sophomore year at high school, and i need do decide which clubs to participate in, because I heard colleges look for extracurricular activities (I'm on the varsity track team, so sports is covered)  So far, I'm going to do National Honor Society, Key Club, Model United Nations (maybe) and FBLA or DECA, or maybe both.

I have a feeling I cant be in both FBLA and DECA at the same time, since they are kinda the same thing, but I'm wondering which one to do. Which one is more prestigious? which one allows you to participate in more scholarships? which one has the most benefits?

Answer
Hi, Steve.

I'm sorry but I don't have any info on FBLA or DECA, as I work with admissions to graduate and professional school.  It sounds like you are more than covered with extracurricular activities as far as what colleges are looking for. One or two strong ones is probably plenty.

The important thing is to keep up a strong GPA and to prepare well for your SAT or ACT.  It can also be helpful for you to get a chance to explore some different career possibilities and to explore your own personal interests and goals for yourself.

In your senior year you can sign up on one of my free programs for guiding students through their undergrad years.    I have programs for people going into grad school, law, business and medicine.  You can go to http://www.advising-help.org and bookmark that site.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes,
