the above post is not completely correct.  The GMAT does not test any knowledge specific to business.  Its questions are general and are focused on determining the test taker's reasoning ability not knowledge pool.  The GMAT tests a person's ability to take the GMAT and studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between GMAT scores and grad school performance.  Some of the questions, like data sufficency are unique to the GMAT and test the IQ of a test taker more than the knowledge of any particular subject.  The GMAT is general and tests only basic concepts in a complex way.
