Question
I  am a 60 year old female. Immunoglobulin E, Total 3215
I have been allergy tested 5 times with negative results. Sed rate, C reactive protein, compliment 4, IGE have been elevated. Homogeneous ANA is intermittently elevated. I have chronic sinus inflammation intermittent rashes and well as chronic inflammation of the pericardium.  I have significant osteoarthritis in my spine, knees and TMJ. What could be causing these symptoms?  Testing for lupus,Sjogrens, rheumatoid arthritis and vasculitis have been negative.

Answer
Amy,
My suggestion is you meet a gynecologist and get your ovaries scanned once. What was the age when you menopaused? Elevated IgE with high ESR, C4 etc indicate problems with ovary. But still I recommend you repeating the other tests like ANA and screening for connective tissue disorders after an year. Sometimes when a person has mixed connective tissue disorder(MCTD), during initial phase the symptoms are overlapping and tests are non-conclusive. As the disease progresses it takes a definitive form and one of the connective tissue disorder becomes predominant. So better to wait and keep screening. Hope I have cleared your doubts, if you have any further questions you can feel free to share your thoughts.

Thanking you!
