Hemingway, Ernest - Female types character

Expert: Josh Silverstein - 10/23/2006

Question
Helo, I am going to write a diploma paper on Hemingway, to be precise, about female types character in Hemingway's prose. I was thinking about dividing them into positive and negative ones. Could you suggest me something?
Thank you.

Answer
Hello,

In Hemingway's work, negative female characters are victimizers, bitches, ruiners of men. Some examples of these characters would be:

-- Brett Ashley from *The Sun Also Rises*
-- Margot Macomber from "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber"

Positive female characters in Hemingway's work are strong and courageous. Examples of these characters would be:

-- Pilar from *For Whom the Bell Tolls*
-- Catherine from *A Farewell to Arms*
