Hemingway, Ernest/dangling modifiers

Question
In Hemingway's A farewell to Arms, he dangles modifiers in chapter XXII paragraph 1, sentences 2 and 3. Did he do this with purpose or was it a mistake in grammar?

Answer
Hello,

I am inclined to say he did it on purpose. Hemingway was a consummate professional when it came to writing. Every word he used was deliberate, every sentence he constructed was as he wanted it. He was a notorious bad speller however. This is seen very clearly in his personal letters.
