Experience
I have been growing herbs organically for 27 years. I have also written and self-published, loose leaf binder, "Herbmans Journal". 2008 is my last year at Smile Herb Shop. I plan to grow herbs in my small back yard and sell at David's Natural Store in Columbia, Md. on saturdays. I also will return to the Baltimore Herb Festival in May 2009(memorial day weekend).I used the word organically grown, but the state came into the picture and stated that I could not use the word unless I become certified & paid a $300.00 fee. I decided to add to my name (99% chemical-free) since nothing on this planet is 100%, except Jesus Christ, taxes & death. My customers were satisfied with this instead of paying a large fee and raising my prices, with no guarantee that it is organic except for a label.Their belief was in my word.

Question
I don't know if you have any knowledge of growing catnip, but I hope you can help.

I plan on growing 3-5 catnip plants in my house in our sun room...I just can't find anything relating to this:

After I spread the seeds and they start to sprout, should I leave all the sprouting seeds to grow, or thin them out so there is just one left?

And which size pot would be the best? I was thinking maybe 4" - 6" would be decent.

Thanks

Answer
Andrew:
Catnip is a hardy herb and do best outdoors. When the seeds sprout to about 2-3", seperate to 3 seedlings. Place in a 10-18" pot. Outdoors catnip will become huge with constant pruning. The more you prune, more growth is abundant. It needs full to partial sun.Air circulation, keep moist, not soggy. Soil should be composted and feed with liquid fish fertilizer every 3 weeks. Can be found at home depot/lowe's. Mice & rats will not get near this plant. It will return each year when outdoors. My medicinal info about this plant is that it helps women during their monthly period. She was in her late 30'searly 40's. I don't know the exact recipe, but I gave to my wife in tea form and it stopped all her crazy moods and they never returned. I believe it was given before the monthly started and taken for at least a week.
