Herbs for Health - Removing Alcohol from Herbal Tinctures

Expert: Dennis Leppanen - 5/11/2009

Question
Mr. Dennis Leppanen:
That was a great answer and information about ehthanol and herbal tinctures.

I recently bought the excellent Herbal Tincture from Amazon Herbs.net Illumination in the 8oz bottle.

I had tried it before in the Liquizon capsules and it was FANTASTIC.  The awesome health improvements and energy improvements were amazing.
So I bought it again but this time in the 8oz bottle and the mixture is distilled water and 20% pure ethanol and it is HARSH.  It tastes horrible, smells horrible and burns when taking it.

So I wanted to remove the alcohol also and what I did was heat up some water in a stainless steel pot until it gets to a rolling boil.  Then I add the dosage of the tincture that I want to the rolling boil.

Then I leave it there for a few minutes but I don't know if that is the best way.  I has reduced the alcohol content somewhat.  I think I may have to leave it for a longer time.

Is this method okay?  Thank you
Omar

Answer
Hello Omar,

I'm happy to hear it improved your health and energy.

The reason alcohol is used is that extracts more of the herbs properties for your health benefits.

Did I understand, that you poured the dosage of tincture to the rolling boil. How much water did you add? It seems that would dilute it too much.

To cut the alcohol content, we normally put the tincture bottle itself into a rolling boiling for 2-3 minutes. This cuts the alcohol content in half without reduces the potent strength of the herbs.

Can you get the tincture make with vinegar or glycerin?

Sending my best,
Dennis
