Herbs for Health - Betaine HCL

Question
Hi Dennis
I am male, 53.
My acid reflux has gotten bad enough in the last few years that my doctor put me on medication (Omeprazole).
Roughly the same time I started it, I noticed I was having a hard time digesting protein, especially red meat.
I have only now thought there might be a connection?
A friend that is into alternative medicine says that I might not be producing ENOUGH acid, and thats why I get gas and bloating from the meat.
She suggested I try Betaine HCL.
I got some and I did feel a difference,I was able to eat a steak no problem, but on the third day I got an exttreme case of acid reflux.
Maybe I took too much? You are only supposed to take it with protein but I was taking it with every meal.
Is there a middle ground here?
Do you think I am producing too much or not enough stomach acid?
Can I take BOTH?
Thanks so much!

Answer
Hi Barrymore,

No, do not take them both. You either are too acidic, or you're not.

Hydrochloric Acid (HCI), which is produced by glands in the stomach, is necessary for the breakdown and digestion of many foods. Insufficient amounts can lead to indigestion.

To determine if you need more hydrochloric acid, take this simple test. Take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice. If the indigestion goes away, you need more HCI. If it makes your symptoms worse, then you have too much acid, and you should take care not to take any supplements that contain HCI.

Prilosec, Nexium, Zantac, etc. will cause harm in the long run, they mask symptoms and mess with your body's ability to digest its foods.

I would suggest Infla-Zyme Forte from American Biologics. This formula is a combination of enzymes and antioxidants for people requiring supplemental digestive enzymes. It aids in the breakdown of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Take 3 tablets following each meal.

I would add a daily serving of yogurt to my diet. This aids digestion by supplying good bacteria.

Alfalfa is a good herb to take. It supplies needed vitamin K and trace minerals that improve digestion.

Make note of what you eat or drink that causes your acid reflux. Eliminate alcohol, caffeine, and foods that give you acid reflux.

Eat a diet high in raw fruits and vegetables.

Catnip, chamomile and peppermint are good teas before bedtime. If your condition persists, I would recommend a gentle cleanse. I would be happy to send one along to you.

Also do not eat four hours before bedtime.

Best wishes,
Dennis
