Herbs for Health - Herbs and Tests

Expert: Dennis Leppanen - 6/24/2009

Question
QUESTION: I just had blood work done and all my results were excellent except for 2 liver enzyme tests, ALT and AST. Normal for ALT is between 5-60 and for AST between 4-43. Both of my totals were over 100. I had an ultrasound and all is well. I DO take lots of herbs and supplements. My primary doctor told me to stop taking them and be retested. Can herbal supplements affect liver blood tests to the point where they may be bad for the liver even though they may be good for you?

ANSWER: Hi Dan,

Yes, you could be taking a couple of herbs and/or supplements that contraindicate with each other.

Send me a list of the herbs and supplements that you are taking. We might be able to figure this thing out.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Dennis

QUESTION: Thanks Dennis. My list: A prostate formula with Saw Palmetto, Pygeum, Stinging Nettle, Rosemary, Chrysin, Maca, Muira Puama. Also Ginger, Host Defense (16 medicinal mushrooms), CoQ10, Hylaronic Acid, Lutein, Policosanol, Pomagrante, Reservatrol, Milk Thistle, Vitamin D3, Primal Defense probiotic and Digest Gold (digestive enzymes). That is everything.

Answer
Hi Dan,

Depending on the dosage amount, there are a couple of question marks here. Maca & Muria Puama are the least studied among the herbs listed. Again, I don't know the formula amounts.

Discontinue use.

Let's try this; Take Saw Palmetto, Milk Thistle, Chinese Ginseng, and Dandelion root instead.

Take a supplement of essential fatty acids.---3 times per day as directed on label.---It improves prostate function.

Take pumpkin seeds as a snack. Stinging nettle is a great tonic herb.
Drink it as a tea.

I'm not sure what we are treating, but this is healthy for both your prostate and your sex life. Remember, a healthy diet, rich in raw fruits and vegetable, a regular exercise program, and a moderate amount of sweets and alcohol does wonders regardless of age.

Check this out for a month or so, then give me a yodel.

Best to you and yours,
Dennis
