Herbs for Health - Sleeping Issues

Expert: Jayne Boyle - 6/16/2009

Question
Good Morning Ms. Boyle,

I wanted to get in touch regarding getting an alternative opinion on an issue. Before I begin, I've been to numerous doctors (including integrative/alternative medicine doctors as well). I got off the birth control pill end of October of 2008...I had skipped heart beats and immense heat rushes that went through my body as I was falling asleep. These were accompanied by this sensation of "internal shaking" that lasted for 5 seconds. Sometimes this was also accompanied by sudden skipped beats that were pretty intense. Went to cardiologists (who said my heart was healthy), had basic panels done (cholesterol, proteins, white and red blood count (all good), thyroid (all normal except slightly elevated on the thyroid antibodies by about 5 points. My integrated med doctor said he can't call me hypothyroid just because of this one factor but suggested I take iodine as as supplement). His diagnosis was that the pill pretty much messed me up and it could take up to a year to get back to normal! He was actually an ob/gyn for about 15 years prior to going into alternative and integrated therapies. Others said its stress and anxiety which is not that case because I have never had this. I work out, I eat well and take care of myself.

Anyways, so the skipped beats were definately subsiding and going away for weeks at a time; I still get them occassionally but its not severe or bad that I feel the "skipped sensation" in my throat like before. The "heat wave" still comes unexpectedly...its not a heat wave anymore and its not as intense but it happens when I am falling asleep. It prevents me from falling asleep because it feels like I have this surge of energy go through me and then subside within 5 seconds. It only happens when falling asleep. The strange thing is it does not happen everyday, I was going nearly 4 weeks of good sleeping. I noticed if I fell asleep pretty quickly I didnt feel it; if I didnt fall asleep quickly it came up. This made me suspect something is still off with my hormones or my sleep-based hormones. Any suggestions on what I can do to rebalance? I'm tired of going to doctors and having all the tests to show nothing. I know what I'm feeling is real and they don't make much sense of it apparently.

Answer
You can try chaste berry or dong quai for hormone balance and for thyroid you can try kelp at least 4 a day.  Drink lots of water during the day and cut out porcessed foods and sugar or reduce.  Caffeine too. Passion flower is good for nerves You can take before bed and supplement with B complex 100 mg and calcium magnesium supplement.  Jayne
