Herbs for Health - herbs for hormone balance

Expert: Jayne Boyle - 6/21/2009

Question
Hi, first of all I want to thank you for what you do ! Also I know since you
aren't seeing me in your office or anything that I am to use herbs at my own
discretion and I take full responsibility... on with the question... So I have a
slight hormone imbalance, I believe. PMS stuff and acne on my back are the
complaints. My periods are almost regular, give or take 4 days.  They last
about 5 days the last 3 are brownish, the first 2 days are heavy and bright. I
DONT get cramps or get depressed. Only sometimes I get just slightly
emotional, nothing major. I DO get really really tired the 4 days prior to onset
of menses. I DO get strong strong strong sugar cravings and a general
dissastisfaction with food for about 6 days prior to onset. 6 months ago I
started getting acne on my upper back which I cannot get off with cleansers,
just started using witch hazel and topical silver on it this week. Its always
there throughout the month but gets fierce around my period, angry red
pimples, etc. Also during my period I get a breakout all around my hairline,
this also started 6 months ago. I weened my infant 3 months ago after her
first b-day, FYI, but haven't noticed any changes in my body since. Also, FYI,
have an adrenal dysfunction  that I am treating with lots of vitamins, C, B, A,
zinc, Mag and Calcium, the regular stuff, plus glandular supplements
(adrenal cortex, spleen, pituitary) and a liver tonic which includes dandelion
+ milk thistle, also taking milky oats for stress support, holy basil,
ashwaga.... lastly I take fish oil and a women's oil combo of flaxseed and
evening primrose ( this cured the pre menses yeast problem I was having last
year and  I just stayed on it )
I just started this program 2 weeks ago, prior to which I was taking no
supplements. I still feel I need an extra herb or two to balance my hormones,
even though it may be related the the adrenal problem I am already
addressing. Tried Dong Quai for the last 2 months in a chinese formula and
no response. Intuitively I feel its not the right one, even though I know it can
take longer than 2 months. False Unicorn Root worked for me several years
ago when I was readjusting post birth control pill, however, those symptoms
were very different. Considering trying that again and also considering black
cohosh.
So in sum, what herbs do you recommend for the PMS sugar cravings and
extra fatigue and the acne ( which is my biggest concern ) ? I get confused
and nervous reading about hormone balancing herbs because the literature
will often say something like " this herb increases estrogen " or " this herb
suppresses estrogen " but then both will claim to result in balance. So Im
thinking.. how the heck do I know which one I need?
Thanks for reading all that! I look forward to your wisdom.

Answer
Alot going on and it would be hard to way what to do.  I would see an nutritionist or a herbalist in your area.  Also you can tgry going to a health food store and getting a liver cleanse. or a bowel cleanse.  Eat healthy during a cleanse fruits an veggies. Youdan try the dong quia again longer and yerb mate for sugar cravings.  Take at lease 100 mg of B's. You can also try wild yam. Drink nettle tea and dandelion tea.  Licorice  capsules  4 a day.is good for adrenals. I think you need that and kelp for thryoid. Good supplement. Try 6 a day. Jayne
