Question
I'm not really a teen, but my brother is.
I'm 20, and he is 14.
He is a freshman at high school now, while I am a freshman in college.

My main concern for him is drugs and alcohol.. and sex and partying and peer pressure and everything.

I have strong morals against it all, and my entire high school life was spent babysitting my friends who were to drunk to move. I went to the parties just to keep everyone from driving drunk.
I am, was, and will always be disgusted with people who drink themselves stupid and get high for "fun."

So, unfortunately, my little brother will probably start to experiment, even though I beg him (AND his friends) not to. I can't control them, I can only tell them what I've seen and what I've been around.

So my question is this.

I want opinions on the other side of the party. I've always been the one looking in. HOW is being stupid-drunk fun? How is it fun when you are so high you cannot even move? Where is the fun in waking up, at the age of 16, in someone's bed? How is it fun?
Please, if you can explain. I am the type of person who tries to see all situations from all possible view points. I am 100% against underage anything, but myfriends tell me it is very fun and exciting.
I want to know why/how.

Answer
Dear Kayla,

You have a very good question that is often asked. Why do people party, drink, and do drugs be fun? Well, the answer to that is also simple. It's an escape. Teenagers are put with a good deal of stress, like grades, colleges, and trying to keep up with their social life all at the same time. It's hard to keep everything perfect.

Stress is basically the main cause. Peer pressure comes after. People are stressed with life and drugs make you feel good. Partying lets them loose. Under the influence gets them away from all the troubles they are facing life and gives the person a good time, even though they don't even know it. And sex is well, a bit of a side effect. It feels good, people want to be cool, so they do it.

You are doing the right thing to tell your brother not to do all the crazy things he wants to. He shouldn't be doing it. However, you have to think that he may want to be free without an extra 'parent' around to give him more worries. Yes, make sure he has morals and that he knows them. Just don't push him too hard.

I hope this helps! Don't hesitate to ask a follow-up!

Always here to help,
~ Alana
