Abouthlndr Expertise I can answer questions about Highlander: The Series' episodes, cast, characters, time lines, etc. As well as direct you to informative web sites, sites where other fans hang out and fun sites like fan-fiction sites, role playing game sites, etc. I don't have much knowledge of the Highlander movies but I have access to a wealth of information through my online sources. I also cannot and will not answer any questions regarding the personal lives of the actors.
Experience I have been an obsessed fan of the series since it first aired on television. I own every episode from all 6 seasons. I belong to several fan based groups on the Internet, participate in one email style, one forum style and one live action style Highlander role playing game as well as "own" (moderator/director) a live action style RPG of my own. I also dabble in writing fan-fiction stories based on the series.
Education/Credentials I am a high school graduate and graduated from a private vocational school as a certified Paramedic.
Question The odd thing about the highlander tv series was that, unlike the movies, all the immortals turn out to be initially adopted with their so-called parents only finding them abandoned and adopting them. Did the producers ever give a decent explanation for why this was so or how exactly the immortals got born/made and by whom? Did the fan-base ever give an explanation or two for the ultimate origin of these Highlanders(re real parents or whatever)?
Thanks,
Geoff
Answer The closest thing the Highlander creators gave as an explanation was...unfortunately...given in the second movie which none of us acknowledge because it was so bazaar (and therefore I won't even bother explaining it.) As fans (and most of us are either aspiring writers or actors with very active imaginations) we didn't actually come up with an answer...per say.....rather an explanation...a justification, if you will.
First of all....since Immortals' wounds heal rather quickly....a female Immortal wouldn't be able to have a menstruation cycle (if at all) like mortal women which would make ovulation near impossible.
Secondly....since Immortals' bodies are capable of absorbing foreign matter that would ordinarily cause infection and death in mortals...it doesn't seem possible for a female Immortal to be able to carry a fetus long enough for it to become a viable baby as their body would see it as a foreign object and absorb it in its attempt to heal.
Thirdly...and probably one of the most logical (and believable justification) considering the life Immortals live....having to constantly look over their shoulder and be ready for a fight to the death....what kind of life would that be to raise a child in?
Lastly....an Immortal who manages to keep his/her head and live for a century or more faces the heart wrenching reality that...as far as relationships go....they have 3 choices. One would be to have a relationship with another Immortal. But then they face the hard reality that the person they love might (and most likely will) get challenged by another Immortal and may lose....(or vice versa). The second choice would be to have a relationship with a mortal but then they will be forced to watch the one they love grow old and die while they stay young and healthy. The third choice would be to remain single...never giving themselves completely to anyone...mortal or immortal.
As you can see it really would not be the kind of life to raise a child in. I hope this answers your question. If you have anymore...please feel free to ask as I never get tired of talking about Highlander (my non-Highlander fan friends say I'm obsessed.....they could be right. :D :D :D ). Take care and remember.....THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE !!!
