Expertise
I can answer most questions about the show, the actors and characters. I also run a collection of over 1600 highlander links and I`ve carefully gone through all of them. If I don`t know something off the top of my head, I usually know where to find it. I`ve watched Highlander since 1992 when it started, and I`ve been on the internet for a year and a half. In that time I`ve visited many of the HL pages out there. As for the show, I`ve watched every episode several times and I belong to a trivia group that over the past year has covered even the most obscure facts about the show

Highlander - Highlander (becoming immortal)

Question
Can you answer this? Immortals are born immortal and continue to age until they first "die". If an immortal never initially "dies" will he/she then eventually die of old age? And if they die of old age, do they become immortal as a really old, sick person? Or do they simple really die and cease to exist? Thanks.

Answer
First, a spoiler warning for Highlander: the Raven :-)

An interesting discussion question and something which they never really went into on the show. In the beginning of the series, it was mentioned that pre-immies were prone to early death, and even compelled to take their own life if death didn't happen on its own. This aspect of immortality (along with several other things) was dropped after the first season though, and from then on, they didn't really deal with it. They didn't even deal with an older immortal (There were a couple, but their age wasn't a part of the storyline).

When Raven came out, the powers that be decided to play around with the 'rules' a bit. In the last episode of the show, Amanda kills Nick, triggering his immortality. She explains that immortality has to be brought about by a violent death, and since he was dying slowly, he would have just died eventually. Going by this, it would be possible for someone to live their entire life with that immortality potential never realized. Of course, this went against several 'slow' deaths established in HL:TS, so many fans ignore it :-)

So, as far as established Highlander canon goes, there's no real answer for you unless you go by Raven... but it's defineately an interesting topic to discuss (Lol... if only they'd had another hundred episodes to explore all the aspects of immortality). Hope this helps,

Christina
