Abouthlndr Expertise I can answer questions about Highlander: The Series' episodes, cast, characters, time lines, etc. As well as direct you to informative web sites, sites where other fans hang out and fun sites like fan-fiction sites, role playing game sites, etc. I don't have much knowledge of the Highlander movies but I have access to a wealth of information through my online sources. I also cannot and will not answer any questions regarding the personal lives of the actors.
Experience I have been an obsessed fan of the series since it first aired on television. I own every episode from all 6 seasons. I belong to several fan based groups on the Internet, participate in one email style, one forum style and one live action style Highlander role playing game as well as "own" (moderator/director) a live action style RPG of my own. I also dabble in writing fan-fiction stories based on the series.
Education/Credentials I am a high school graduate and graduated from a private vocational school as a certified Paramedic.
Question I'm doing an (university-level) English report on the "vancouverness" of the series. I'm having great difficulty finding material/info ... Here are some questions I have:
-what meaning does The Highlander (tv series) take from Vancouver?
-what meaning does The Highlander give to Vancouver? {i.e. do you agree that it contributed to "hollywood north"?}
-who is the audience (local, national, international)? What are the implications of this audience {i.e. in terms of style, content, etc}
-what histories, facts, knowledge does the series call upon? what histories are omitted, elided, or potentially misrepresented?
-is The Highlander a mainstream or dominant representation? are there opportunities within it to resist this representation or inject other voices and versions?
-whose interests does The Highlander serve? how do we know and what are the consequences of this interest?
(and can you help me name some of the exact filming locations in gastown/Vancouver?)
Any help would be appreciated,
-Lena Wilson
ps when were the dvds released?
Answer I can't help you with exact film locations but I can direct you to the following site which may be able to help with that.
As for the impact of Highlander on Vancouver....I know that it was one of the first TV series to do it's filming there and helped lead the way for more TV series being filmed in Canada (since it is cheaper for them than filming in Hollywood). The fictitious city of Seacouver was named combining Seattle and Vancouver. Highlander's audience is definitely global (and is still being aired in Canada, the UK, Scotland and Ireland). Highlander used a lot of historical flashbacks. All were extensively researched so that time periods, costuming and all aspects were accurate and they touched on periods such as the Bronze Age, the 15th & 16th Centuries (with specific attention to the war between the Scottish and Britain, Scotland's loss at Culoden (sp?) and Bonnie Prince Charlie's reign), the "Old West" (primarily in the Pacific Northwest Territories), WWII's European Theatre, the Civil War & slavery, the US's Prohibition in the 20s & Segregation in the 50s. None of which were misrepresented. I'm not sure what the question about whose interest is served means, exactly, but I will say that the premise of the series deals with life as an immortal, living through the time periods, watching the changes in the world and society and how they would have to deal with the loss of loved ones (Mortals) and the moral issues they would have had to deal with in regards to the Game. I don't know if any of this is helpful but I hope it is. Let me know if there is anything else i can do to help.
