Question
I have heard rumors that it is unwise to go hiking in bear country when you are on your period, because it can attract bears. I had never really thought of this until someone mentioned it and now i am wondering. Can you advise?

Answer
Dear Liz -

My husband and I have heard this rumor also, back when we were backpacking in Yellowstone Park 15 years ago.  I did a little checking, though, and the experts at both Yellowstone and at Backpacker magazine say that there is no danger to hiking or even backpacking when you have your period.  Experts have reviewed decades worth of data and say that there is no correlation at all to bear attacks and menstruating women.  You can read what they have to say for yourself:

http://www.backpacker.com/ask_the_gear_chick_hiking_while_menstruating/gear/ask_...

And, right from the National Park Service:

http://www.nps.gov/yell/naturescience/bears_women.htm

(this article says you have no problem with black bears or grizzlies, but I wouldn't go near any polar bears if I were you!)

So, it looks like you're safe hiking in bear country whenever you want.  Both of these articles above include tips on packing out waste associated with menstruation, though.

Thanks for asking the question - I learned something, too!
