About Chris Johnson
Expertise
I can answer most questions on equipment for outdoor activities such as walking, mountain biking, rock climbing and paragliding, in the UK. I`ve limited watersports experience so you`d be better off asking someone else these questions. Questions about the above activities themselves as well as about the equipment will also be answered as I`ve got several contacts who can pass on information. I`m a keen walker/mountainbiker/rock climber/paraglider pilot in the UK. I`ve been doing outdoor sports for about 15 years including trips to the French Alps and Trekking in the Nepalese and the Indian Himalayas. I`ve been buying and making outdoor clothing and equipment for about the same amount of time.

Experience
Waking up at the foot of Annapurna South is something I won't forget. I would say that my first paraglider flight was unforgettable but every flight since seems to have been more unforgettable.

Hiking/Backpacking/Camping - hiking boots

Expert: Chris Johnson - 1/14/2009

Question
Hello Chris Johnson,
I use to hike years ago but have not purchased boots in a long time. I am also
recovering from a foot injury. I would really appreciate a suggestion on boots
that "will offer alot of ankle support". I also need them in an extra wide eee
width. I may also use them for work as well as a janitorial contractor.
So maybe a dual purpose boot if possible. I live in a large city with most of
the name brand stores etc.

Your suggestions are appreciated !!!!
Thanks,
Ron

* are you familiar with red wing boots

Answer
Ron

Not sure I've ever come across EEE fittings before.  You don't say where you are from so I'm wondering if that might be why.  For a dual purpose boot you could try High Tech Magnum boots as used by military and police forces in the US and the UK.  I have a pair of high leg Gortex lined ones that I use on my motorbike.  They've been great and come well up my legs although that doesn't always mean they will give you good support.  They are light however and so less tiring to wear and if you are less tired your less likely to stumble and need the extra support.

In the end you need a boot that fits above all else so I'd speak to your local suppliers to see what extra wide fitting boots they recommend.

Chris
