About Chris Johnson
Expertise
I can answer most questions on equipment for outdoor activities such as walking, mountain biking, rock climbing and paragliding, in the UK. I`ve limited watersports experience so you`d be better off asking someone else these questions. Questions about the above activities themselves as well as about the equipment will also be answered as I`ve got several contacts who can pass on information. I`m a keen walker/mountainbiker/rock climber/paraglider pilot in the UK. I`ve been doing outdoor sports for about 15 years including trips to the French Alps and Trekking in the Nepalese and the Indian Himalayas. I`ve been buying and making outdoor clothing and equipment for about the same amount of time.

Experience
Waking up at the foot of Annapurna South is something I won't forget. I would say that my first paraglider flight was unforgettable but every flight since seems to have been more unforgettable.

Hiking/Backpacking/Camping - Camping along the GR's in France

Expert: Chris Johnson - 11/5/2009

Question
Hello, I will soon be traveling along the GR 9 in the Aix-En-Provence. I was wondering about camping off the trails and if  people do this. I am experienced in the outdoors, can use a compass and map and was wondering if it was frowned upon or not. Given the fact that It would be off of the trail and only for the night. Thank you,
Hathaway

Answer
I'd recommend against this because, as far as I remember, its against the rules of the National park the G9 runs through.  Camping rough is OK in the great wildernesses of the world where few people travel but in Europe the population is so dense that if everyone who walked the routes camped rough it would no longer be the wilderness it is today.  Unfortunately not everyone has the respect for our great outdoors that it requires to ensure it continues to stay this way.  Because of this rules have been introduced to try to protect it.  That means that we're not able to enjoy it to the same extent as we used to. I've heard the French Park Rangers do not take lightly to rule breakers and it would be a shame to spoil the trip.  They are renowned for knowing where and when to catch rough campers.  Its their back yard!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  But if you do stay in the recognised camp sites you do get the benefits of rotisserie chicken, fresh French bread and croissants and good conversation with other like minded individuals.

Hope you have a great trip
Chris
