AboutMatt Wertman Expertise You`re thinking of hiking the infamous Appalachian Trail and now you`d like to get the important information on everything and anything from someone who`s actually done it. I completed my hike October 8th, 1999 taking a total of 5 months and 8 days. I can help you by giving constructive feedback on gear, trip cost, people, and general expectations.
Question Hey, I'm thinking about going to philmont in two years. I want to get a pack
now, and don't know if i should get an internal or external frame pack. (This
pack would mainly be for philmont, i have another smaller one for
miscelaneous trips) I have looked at the Osprey Argon 85, and liked it a lot,
but it doesn't have good water bottle holders (you can't reach them while
hiking) and doesn't have any lash-on points. Is that still ok for philmont?
Thanks and be honest, I have not bought anything i can't return easily!
THANKS!!!
Answer I'd consider weight alone and functionality. Keep in mind , some packs have an internal water system which doesn't require bottle holders. Consider to, often you won't need to attach things on the outside if you're carrying the right amount of gear.
No offense, but the boyscouting philoshy from my observation has you carrying way more than you actually need on trips such as this.
If you're pack wieght is under 40 lbs- there is no reason you can't keep it all inside.
Internal / external frame is really a preferance thing. Both will do the job.
