Hiking/Backpacking/Camping - Camping in NYC area

Expert: Roy Wallen - 6/18/2009

Question
Hello,
I am from NYC and would like to organize a camping trip for 8-10 friends for July 4th Weekend. We are a strong and healthy group, but beginning level campers. Do you know of any areas that we can go camping in the area, relatively easily accessible to NYC? Let me know if you have any suggestions or can help us go about figuring it out.

Answer
Having never lived in New York City and not having much experience camping in areas accessible to the city, I'm not in the best position to answer your question.  I do know that Sterling Forest and Harriman State Parks, northwest of the city, are popular (which means crowds on the July 4th week-end).  Straight up the Hudson and, therefore, likely accessible by train, is Bear Mountain State Park where the Appalachian Trail crosses the river.  If you are inexperienced campers, a state park is a good idea as tips on camping will be posted and rangers will be present who can help.
For other resources, you can try your local library to get suggestions on camping.  The AMC (ourdoors.org) may also be helpful.
Hope this helps.  Most of all, have fun.
