Hiking/Backpacking/Camping - Camping Tent: Confusion

Expert: Matt Wertman - 6/30/2009

Question
Hi Matt,

I am a first time camper and after some reading, I decided to spend around $200 for my first tent and shortlisted 2 of them -

1) Kelty Yellowstone 6 - $199
2) REI Hobitat 6 - $220

The reviews for both of them are pretty good, infact the Kelty product has better reviews. Please see reviews below -

Kelty - http://www.buzzillions.com/dz_339586_kelty_yellowstone_6_tent_reviews

Hobitat - http://www.buzzillions.com/dz_478714_rei_hobitat_6_tent_reviews

The Kelty has a 4.2 / 5 and Hobitat has 3.9 / 5. Both fo these tents are available on REI if you'd liek to review their material/type etc or I can send you the details.

I am not sure if I made the right decision but I picked up the REI Hobitat 6.

Reason why I liked is because the dome in the hobitat is more spacious and is good for both of us (I'm 6'3" and my wife is 5'9"). I think in the Kelty model, the only place where the height is good is at the center.

Please let me know what your comments are. If you think the Hobitat was a mistake, then I can return it for a Kelty yellowstone or equivalent.

Much appreciate your help, thanks.

Dodz.

Answer
I'd say you're fine no matter what.  Dome tent's are great cause hey stand alone.  If this isn't being put into a back pack, no worries. Bt if you'll hike with it, weight is key.  If one model has a 2nd door, you my want to consider that.

Otherwise in that range and htose tent, both shoud be great.

Happy camping
