AboutChris Johnson Expertise I can answer most questions on equipment for outdoor activities such as walking, mountain biking, rock climbing and paragliding, in the UK. I`ve limited watersports experience so you`d be better off asking someone else these questions. Questions about the above activities themselves as well as about the equipment will also be answered as I`ve got several contacts who can pass on information. I`m a keen walker/mountainbiker/rock climber/paraglider pilot in the UK. I`ve been doing outdoor sports for about 15 years including trips to the French Alps and Trekking in the Nepalese and the Indian Himalayas. I`ve been buying and making outdoor clothing and equipment for about the same amount of time.
Experience Waking up at the foot of Annapurna South is something I won't forget. I would say that my first paraglider flight was unforgettable but every flight since seems to have been more unforgettable.
Question Hi Chris
I am writing an article geared toward the beginning day hiker. As a sidebar to my article I would like to include your expert advice on Hiking boot/shoe selection for the beginner. I would like to cover what to look for in a hiking shoe or boot; what's appropriate for the beginner without making a huge investment; pros/cons of boots vs shoes, materials used in upper/soles, proper fit etc. I see lots of people wearing tennis shoe on the trail. Is this a good idea? Why/Why not? If you can think of any other considerations a beginner should be aware of please feel free to add it to your response. If my article is sold I would be using your name as an expert and your affiliation with allexperts.com, do you have any problems with this.
Thanks,
Answer Sorry its taken so long to get back, I've been away. Choosing a boot is very different in different situations. The best boot is based on the use of the boot, the age of the person and their fitness level and confidence level. With designs changing every year with
Things to consider
Heavy boots tire you out and you're then more likely to fall. Light boots give your ankles less protection if you do fall but you get less tired wearing them.
Replaceable souls on a boot for a child who is going to outgrow the boot before the sole wears out seems a little over engineered.
However I think you should probably seek the advice of someone with experience in selling, designing or recommending shoes specifically rather that than of someone who just goes out and walks on an ever decreasing basis.
