Question
What are Hindu beliefs on abortion? Is an unborn fetus considered as part of Ahimsa?

Answer
Dear Christopher,

Unborn fetus is certainly considered a part of Ahimsa (for theists, it has a soul, and for atheists like me, it is potentially a person). But if the fetus is with a serious physical disability, endangers the life of the mother, or is the result of a rape (in which case we will leave the decision to the mother), we would not be against an abortion. With best regards,

Yours sincerely,
